Writer’s works chosen to complete canoe sculpture project

A new interpretive panel adorns the Centennial sculpture, Portage, in Patterson Park in La Ronge.

The work of 14 writers will adorn paddle-shaped markers to bring to completion, Portage, the northern Centennial sculpture that sits in Patterson Park in La Ronge.

A small group of writers, along with the sculptor, Chris St. Amand, chose the work of 14 writers.

Initially a call was put out for 12 writings that would reflect experiences of Saskatchewan, particularly northern Saskatchewan, but, St.

Amand said, there were a wide variety of entries and it got to an impossible editing job to cut out two of the entries. Four poems and 10 stories make up the writing for the project.

“I felt that the 14 picked were very equal, so I supported 14 as opposed to 12. I felt they were strong stories,” St. Amand said.

Once the written pieces were chosen, several had to be edited to fit the scale of the plate being used to create the paddles for the project.

The written pieces will be laser-etched onto pieces of steel, which in turn, will be mounted onto the steel, paddle-shaped profile, which will be mounted onto a timber post and anchored into the ground.

“The laser etching is being done; the paddles are ready,” St. Amand said.

St. Amand said, he expects to have the paddles in the Town’s hand by the first week of November.

“Then, it’s a matter of how and when they arrive to have these put up.”

The original proposal for the Portage creation included the paddles being placed around the sculpture, but, St. Amand said, following meetings with Town officials, the idea of aligning the paddles along a public walkway was introduced.

“I immediately liked that idea. With the title of the piece being Portage, the idea of walking or being on a trail, it just seemed to fit.”

The writer’s selected are: Peggy (Hayes) Looby, of Yorkdale, Sask.; Lindsay Blair, of La Ronge; Trevor Casper, of Lafayette, Louisiana; Eunice McKenzie, of Air Ronge; Laurel Archer, of Comox, B.C; Shelley Leedahl, of Saskatoon; R.P MacIntyre, of La Ronge; Felicia Daunt, of La Ronge; Gareth Cook, of Air Ronge; Linda Mikolayenko, of Air Ronge; Roger Jerome, of Air Ronge; Jim Searson, of Air Ronge and Jane Lyster, of Lyn, Ont.
