Lieutenant Governor’s youth forum in La Ronge

Participants in the Lieutenant Governor’s Youth Leadership Forum worked on video presentations at Churchill High Community School (CCHS) while in La Ronge. From L to R Brad Lulik, Regina; Lisa Yang, Saskatoon; Madelyn Perkins, Saskatoon; Corrine Holliday-Scott, Meadow Lake; C.J. Gibson, instructor and Breanne Senik, La Ronge.

For three youth the Lieutenant governor’s Youth Leadership Forum was a life-changing event.

“Awesome,” said Breanne Senik, of La Ronge and a student at Churchill Community High School (CCHS).

Participation in the 12- day event took students to Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw and La Ronge, where they had the opportunity to meet leaders in government, Crown Corporation, the private sector and postsecondary institutions, according to a news release from the Lieutenant Governor’s office dated Oct. 20.

Breanne Senik said she enjoyed meeting new people, “people that have an infl uence on our lives,” and “it was just a great experience all together.”

For Rick Robillard participating in the Forum gave him the chance to “discover numerous opportunities I didn’t know about.”

For Deborah McCloud, also a CCHS student, staying at the RCMP Academy stood out. “I thought the people were friendly; they treated us really well.”

Senik said she found meeting leaders such as Premier Brad Wall and Chief Tammy Cook-Searson a highlight of the Forum.

“Chief Tammy Cook- Searson is the first female leader (of her Band); she’s shown women can be leaders, which we’ve known all along.”

For Robillard a highlight was meeting University of Saskatchewan President Peter MacKinnon.

Robillard said MacKinnon talked with feeling and “every time he talks he inspires people; he’s an example of leadership.”

Meeting leaders from various walks of life and learning some of their background and “how they got to where they are,” was a highlight for McCloud, she said.

“It’s been a life changing experience; I learned about many different ways that people lead,” Senik said, adding no two leaders lead the same way.

“A leader has to be true to themselves first and not take themselves too seriously.”

For McCloud the experience was also “lifechanging,” she said.

Each leader is different and everyone has “their own leadership style and it’s so true because when you sit there and listen to them, you feel the difference in their leadership styles in just how they talk to you.”

Robillard said by just listening to the presenters he thought his potential leadership style was strengthened, “because of what they have been through in their life, their backgrounds. They tell about (what) strongly infl uenced them.”

Senik said encouraging younger students to apply to participate in future Forums is one way she will bring back what she’s experienced and learned and share it.

“It sure opens up your life,” she said of the experience.

She will also encourage others to become leaders in groups and in school and “to be leaders in their own way.”

And to stay physically fi t and healthy, is another goal she recommends to others.

McCloud said she plans to continue being active in her school encouraging others to develop their leadership skills and become role models.

She plans to use what she’s learned to further develop her own leadership skills, particularly in the area of communication.

Robillard said he plans to share his experience with others when he returns home and encourage others to become involved in education because, “education is the window to the world.”

While in La Ronge the group visited the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB), Robertson’s Trading Post and flew to Nistowiak Falls near Stanley Mission.

This is the third annual Lieutenant Governor’s Youth Leadership Forum; it is designed offer youth an opportunity to enhance their personal leadership potential through a variety of experiences.

This years participants were: Richelle Baer, Goodsoil; Laura Bieber, Indian Head; Jaden Boucher, La Loche; Nicholas Chandna, Moose Jaw; Stephen Clarke, Buffalo Narrows; Heather Gardiner- Roy, Beauval; Luke Hergott, Bruno; Corrine Holliday-Scott, Meadow Lake; Charlotte Janzen, Rosthern; Colin King, La Loche; Janelle Lucyk, Regina; Deborah Mc- Cloud, Air Ronge; Fashia Moleski, Fort Qu’Appelle; Madelyn Perkins, Saskatoon; Rick Robillard, Black Lake; Nicole Roeher, Hodgeville; Breanne Senik, La Ronge and Lisa Yang, Saskatoon.
