A spaghetti luncheon, awareness walk, charity
hockey game and jersey auction made up the La Ronge
Ice Wolves second annual Drive for Change – an initiative
to raise awareness and support cancer research
and care.
The weeklong drive included a spaghetti luncheon
at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre.
Participants in the Drive for Change Walk hiked
from the Lac La Ronge Indian Band offi ce to the CIBC
building downtown and back Oct. 23; a few players took
pledges for the walk, said Brandi Bell, marketing manager
and administrator for the La Ronge Ice Wolves
“The walk was to show what they were raising
awareness for,” she said.
The Ice Wolves faced off with RCMP members and
friends in a charity hockey game Oct. 24; the proceeds
from the game and a chili dinner will also go to the
Drive.
Throughout the week, from Mon. Oct. 20 to noon on
Sun. Oct. 25 people could bid on an Ice Wolves pink
jersey on line; the jerseys were presented at the Ice
Wolves game Sunday night.
At the end of the game each player removed his
jersey and presented it to the highest bidder.
The removal and presentation of the jerseys was
symbolic of all the money the players raised throughout
the week and “being able to give the shirt of their
back,” Bell said.
“We worked really hard with our health region to
make sure all the money stays to benefi t northerners,”
she added.
