  • LLRIB community plan launched

    LLRIB community plan launched

Krista Shore shared her journey through trauma, addictions, an HIV positive diagnosis to researcher, advocate, activist and author.

The culmination of three years of work, the launch of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) Community Plan and Community Plan Action was held in each of the LLRIB communities, including La Ronge on Friday, March 30 at Senator Myles Venne School.

LLRIB, with funding from Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Canada (ANAC), initiated the process, engaging people from the Cities and Environment Unit, Faculty of Architecture and Planning, Dalhousie University, Halifax, to assist in the process.

Chief Tammy Cook-Searson spoke at the launching of the Plan in La Ronge, saying the process included bringing people from the communities together to share ideas and input into the plan. Federal funding has been cut in half twice over the duration of the project, she said.

The vision for the project: “Working together to make change happen, we will lift the limits that hold us back and inspire community innovation, making life better for all” The end results: a set of two colourfully, illustrated books containing the Plan and intended actions to initiate the Plan.

The big difference with the plan, it’s community-based, based on the input from the people and each community and is divided into four areas: land, people, settlement and economics.

The books are illustrated with photographs, maps and graphs giving details of the community.

The Plan Action looks at the introduction for each community to the plan, background, employment rates, the land, strengths and issues, vision of where community plans to go in the future, structure map, and the actions for shaping the future.

The books includes the project ideas under the specific headings of: capitalize on our assets and stimulate entrepreneurships; open communication, governance and leadership; re-invent housing; promote recreation and wellness; empower youth; and build connections for each community.
