The popular response that police had been waiting for for months came on Monday with the assassination of mafioso Francesco del Palso. Observers believe it could close a bloody chapter in the history of organized crime.

“It was only a matter of time before he was removed. We all expected it, even he tried to leave the country,” says criminologist Maria Mourani.
The 53-year-old convict has been on a tightrope for months, suspected by police of, among other things, the attempted murder of Vito Rizzuto’s youngest son, Leonardo Rizzuto, last March. Also, he was arrested shortly after at the airport with a one-way ticket to Europe and no luggage with him.
“He was desperate, believes professor and author, mafia expert Antonio Nicasso. If you want to kill someone like Leonardo Rizzuto, you have to have a strong base and forces behind you. The fact that he wanted to flee shows a weakness. If he had people to support him, as he implied, he May still be alive.
No retaliation is expected
If del Palso was once Vito Rizzuto’s confidant, he drifted away from the Sicilian clan during the dead godfather’s imprisonment, perhaps out of overconfidence.
“He believed he had the expertise to take it on a larger scale, he saw an opportunity and demanded more power. It was about power and succession, basically,” Mr. Nicasso adds.
Also, many experts consulted Newspaper Don’t even expect to retaliate for this murder.
“He is a known character. There are many reasons why many individuals hate him,” commented retired Montreal police officer Andre Gelinas.
A successful deal
To see the number of projectiles fired in Del Palso’s direction, everything indicates that the shooter did not want to miss his shot. Remember he was the target of an attempted murder just two blocks from his home last November.
“He was lucky, but he wanted revenge. If we had missed him this time, he would have wanted to retaliate even more,” says M.me Maurani.
