A “Destiny 2” invasion that wasn't

We're heading toward the end of Destiny 2. Well, not really. But the end of the first Decade From Destiny 2, the story of the Traveler's light and darkness that has been the driving force behind the entire series. Now it's time for some thought before the final look.

This article sparked a couple of posts I saw circulating, One said Savathun is the best villain from The Witness and second Which indicates how strange it was that when the large fleet of Pyramid ships arrived they were… empty.

I mentioned that I thought this was an inflection point for the game, and I truly believe that to be true. It felt like a pivotal moment where suddenly, the pot wasn't as big as it could have been. That there wasn't an entirely new race of enemies that poured from those ships when the time came to reveal what was inside. They were infested with old enemies and one thin man we had never seen before.

This “empty” idea worked for a while. I was fine with the discovery of the first pyramid buried under the moon, as it seemed like something that clearly would have been abandoned long ago, and that was To the fullest extent Great moment to see it for the first time… Then, the noise generated in Destiny 2's Season of the Worthy led to small dots appearing on the radar that showed that the Pyramids, which had been activated during the Red War campaign, were heading towards us. Then they arrived in the season of arrival. Nothing came out of the pyramids, but they did hollow out some of our planets and moons which seemed like a big problem.

But then… nothing. Over time, in the next few expansions and seasons, we slowly learn that pyramids are just…pyramids. Like the traveler, they are quasi-causal beings and are simply beings. Some have a single disciple, such as Rhulk, but are not full of Rhulk's race, since you must be the last surviving member of your race to obtain true disciple status. Eventually we learned that the Witness, the thing controlling all these shadowy pyramids, was also, in a sense, the only surviving member of his species, embodying an entire civilization in a single being.

That's…pretty lame, if you ask me. The fact that the arrival of the pyramid did not bring a new force to conquer the system was a bad decision and a poor use of resources. By Beyond Light, Destiny Lost hope It needed to pump a really new enemy race, which is unusual in other long-running games. We got Taken, but that was a retcon of old enemies with new abilities, and Scorn, a modified Fallen. But none of those pyramids, which have been a much-hyped event for years.

This goes back to the long rumored arrival of “The Veil”, which was supposed to be the name of the enemy race, but as we've now seen, has turned out to be The Veil, the great tadpole of Lightfall who will soon help us through the Traveler's Gate. Not quite the same.

The thing is, parts of this are certainly already starting to fall into place. At this point, we've got a number of enemies that completely feel like they all could have been part of the Pyramid Race, but instead have been slowly trickling in for over two years now. We have Rhulk, a decidedly unique enemy model as the Witch Queen's raid boss. We got tormentors in Lightfall, and super tormentors with Nezarec. We acquired pyramid mech armor for the Cabal during that time. And now with The Final Shape, we get Subjugators, which are little Rhulks with Strand or Stasis powers, kind of like Scorn Captains.

This adds up to at least a third of the total units you would need for a full race, but those were creeping up for release and were definitely not ready for the post-Access invasion. For example, Scorn and Cabal have eight enemy types, so we're here at what, 3-4?

I think all of this feeds into why Destiny 2's finale feels so hollow. We are at war against nothing but disloyal versions of the Hive, Vex, Scorn, and Taken powered by The Witness and his servants. And they're right, the Witness is a far less fleshed out villain, I mean almost any other villain we've faced. Especially Savathun, but even Calus, Eramis, Riven, Oryx, and even Xivu Arath who we've never actually seen before. How are we supposed to really care about this showdown against something that has probably had dozens of lines in this entire series? does not work.

My greatest hope for Destiny 2 after The Final Shape is that after ten years, we'll finally get a whole new race of enemies to fight, not one based on an old one, and we only had two of them Those In ten years. Whether it's kind of ending Rhulk's enemy run or something else, it's been a long time coming, and the fact that this run has happened no Her presence ultimately marked a turning point in the game's story that pushed it in a much worse direction.
