A man is in critical condition after an attack north of Montreal

A man in his 30s is in critical condition after a violent fight over a drug case in Montreal’s North last night.

An argument between two men on the sidewalk at the intersection of rue de Charny and rue Laurier would have degenerated just before 5 p.m.

Witnesses said a 23-year-old man physically assaulted a 38-year-old man, beating him while he was on the ground.

A father returning from daycare with his four-year-old son came running when he saw the badly injured man in the snow.

“He was really confused. My son kept saying, ‘Oh boo the gentleman,'” Jason Carbrey, who came to the victim’s aid without thinking twice, testified to the newspaper.

Coatless and in -10°C flip-flops, the man looked drab at first glance.

“He was on his side, not moving. When he finally opened his eyes, I asked him his name and where we were, and he had no idea.

Trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Mr Carbrey was advised to remain calm while waiting for help, which soon arrived.

Semi-conscious and intoxicated, the victim was taken to hospital in critical condition, said Caroline Chevrefils, public relations officer for the Montreal Police Service.

However, his condition improved in the evening.

The other person involved in the clash has been arrested and will be questioned.

The scene has been secured and investigations are underway.
