Biden supports Johnson's plan for Ukraine and Israel; Calls for a vote this week

President Biden on Wednesday announced his support for House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-LA) proposal for three separate bills providing U.S. aid to Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific region, and urged passage of the bills this week.

“The House must approve the package this week and the Senate must quickly follow suit. I will sign this bill immediately to send a message to the world: We stand with our friends, and we will not allow Iran or Russia to succeed,” Biden said in a statement.

“I strongly support this package to get critical support to Israel and Ukraine, provide much-needed humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza, and enhance security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The president continued: “Israel faces unprecedented attacks from Iran, and Ukraine faces ongoing bombardment from Russia, which has intensified significantly in the past month.”

Johnson unveiled text for three supplemental national security bills earlier on Wednesday, and the text of a fourth bill is expected soon.

The president's support for the bills gives the green light for Democrats to join Republicans who vote in favor of foreign aid bills. Johnson's decision to move forward with separate foreign aid bills is an attempt to allow Republican critics of sending aid abroad to vote no without killing all of America's national security priorities.
