The Giants are on a mission to add talent this offseason. Agent Scott Boras is confident he represents more than a few interesting free agent options.
Boras said on Wednesday San Francisco Chronicle John Shea He considers five of his clients to be suitable for San Francisco.
the list? Starting pitchers Sean Manea, Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell, as well as outfielder Cody Bellinger and third baseman Matt Chapman.
“The whole group,” Boras told Shea.
The Giants have three positions identified in their 2024 starting rotation: ace Logan Webb — an NL Cy Young Award finalist — along with veteran Alex Cobb and 22-year-old emerging prospect Kyle Harrison.
Cobb, who had a career-record 3.87 ERA in 28 starts last year, will be out until at least April due to offseason hip surgery. Youngsters Tristan Beck and Keaton Wynn, as well as veteran Anthony DeSclafani, are expected to be in the mix.
In short, there is plenty of room for president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi to make a significant impact in the rotation.
Snell joins Webb as one of three finalists for the NL Cy Young Award after posting a league-best 2.25 ERA and 5.8 hits allowed per nine innings across 32 starts for the San Diego Padres. The Giants witnessed his dominance firsthand, failing to score a single run against Snell over 18 innings (three starts).
Montgomery posted a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts for the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers this season. He started six games for the Rangers in the playoffs en route to winning the World Series.
Mania declined the 2024 player option under the contract he signed with the Giants last season. The 31-year-old lost his place in the San Francisco rotation after early struggles last year, but found his rhythm again in the bullpen and returned to the rotation to close out the year.
The Giants’ lineup, which ranked 24th in runs scored last season, could also benefit from a boost.
Bellinger, the 2019 NL Player of the Year, rediscovered his swing on a one-year proving deal with the Chicago Cubs, hitting .307/.356/.525 with 26 at-bats last season. This will set him up for a big payday this season.
Chapman, the longtime star of the Oakland Athletics, hits the open market at 30 years old. The Victorville, Calif., native hit .234/.327/.429 with 44 homers over two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays while continuing to be one of the league’s best third basemen. Chapman won his fourth Gold Glove at the hot corner that year.
Boras is not shy about impressing his clients. He’s also not shy about raising prices in free agency. But if the Giants are willing to take out the checkbook, they will have plenty of options this winter to assemble the roster for new manager Bob Melvin.
