A British Columbia activist campaigning to get rid of drug laws sent his province's 87 MPs an unexpected gift: magic mushrooms and a cocoa leaf.
As unlikely as it sounds, that's exactly what Dana Larson did to spark a debate about the “absurdity” of anti-drug laws. The latter is mentioned in a letter with collections of the Golden Teacher – the strain of mushrooms he sent – commonly used for its “beneficial therapeutic properties”.
“Unfortunately, possession of a gram of this mushroom is still considered a criminal offense in Canada,” he wrote, “Vancouver Sun.”
According to Eleanor Sturco, MP for Surrey South and former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, this unacceptable situation should be treated like drug trafficking. When she realized the package's contents, the former police officer contacted Vancouver police.
“The outrage I feel is that by receiving these items, it puts me in contact with something that could play a role in gang activity,” he told local media, noting that these could be products from South American cartels.
“It may have played a role in killing someone, and that doesn't apply to me,” he added.
