Fierce fire at Buz: Body found

All indications are that it is the body of the teenager who went missing from the fire.

“In order to confirm the identity of the victim to the satisfaction of the coroner, identification procedures must be carried out in a forensic science and forensic medical laboratory,” notes Hélène St-Pierre, spokeswoman for the Sûreté du Québec.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. However, the SQ confirms that no criminal element has been revealed in the file. The mayor confirmed to the media that the residence did not have a working smoke alarm.

A long fight

Firefighters were called to a residence on 90th Street in St.-Georges on Tuesday evening at 10:15 p.m.

As of 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, the fire was not yet under control, said Hélène Saint-Pierre, spokeswoman for the Sûreté du Québec.

“Given the scale of the fire, the structure collapsed completely,” explains Frédéric Morin, director of the fire service in Saint-Georges.

All the trash ended up in the basement. “Quietly, we had to clear the debris through the debris and get to the last fire source at the bottom of the basement. That's why it took so long to master,” explains Mr. Morin.

A wanted teenager

When firefighters arrived at the scene, two adults and three children were able to get out of the apartment on their own, Mr Morin confirms.

Five people were taken to hospital for treatment of minor, non-life-threatening injuries such as smoke inhalation.

But, a teenager is missing. After a day of searching, authorities finally found a body in the rubble.

An investigation has been initiated

The building was a total loss. It is a two-story single-family residence from 1905, built with multi-thickness clapboards and insulated with lumber. This caused the fire to spread rapidly.

A fire department official said that if the building is completely destroyed by fire, it is very difficult to find the cause.

“When we got there, there was a massive explosion. “I can't come up with a hypothesis about the cause,” he said.

As with every disappearance, the investigation was transferred to the Sûreté du Québec. Witnesses must be met and expert assessments completed to determine the causes and circumstances of the event.
