During a New Year's Eve performance of their hit song “American Idiot,” legendary punk band Green Day changed their lyrics to attack former President Trump and his followers.

While playing the 2004 song for “Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve” on ABC Sunday night, the band changed the lyrics of the second verse to remove MAGA.

Although lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong appeared to distort the lyrics, Multiple outlets reported That he sang “I'm Not Part of the MAGA Agenda” instead of the original song “I'm Not Part of the Rednecks' Agenda.”

Either way, the phrase “MAGA agenda” could be clearly referenced during the performance, which seemed to elicit cheers from the audience.

The song was written as a protest against American culture in the post-9/11 era, with verses summarizing the band's discontent with the country. The original lyrics of the second verse read: “Well, maybe I'm America. I'm not part of the redneck agenda. Now it's all propaganda. Sing to the age of paranoia.”

Their New Year's Eve performance wasn't the first time the band members performed the song with such anti-Trump lyrics. During the 2019 iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas, Green Day sang the same lyrics as “MAGA Agenda.”

During a performance of their other song “Bang Bang” during the 2016 American Music Awards, Armstrong chanted: “No Trump! No KKK! No fascist USA!”

The lead singer's disdain for Trump and conservative political issues has never been a secret. That same year, Armstrong compared Trump to Adolf Hitler in an interview with Kerrang! magazine.

“The worst problem I see with Trump is who his followers are,” he said. I actually feel bad for them, because they are poor, working class people who can't stand on their own two feet. They're just turned off and he's a prey to their wrath.

“He just said, ‘You don't have any options and I'm the only one, I'll take care of it myself.'” I mean, that's——Hitler, man! added the musician.

Between songs during a concert in France in 2018, Armstrong spoke to the audience about Trump, saying: “I hate Donald Trump so much. I was screaming that I hate George Bush. This one's a little different. This one's bad, like acid has gone bad. Fuck LSD and the American right, man.

In response to the overturn of Roe v. Wade in 2022, Armstrong told an audience in London that he was “renunciating” his US citizenship. He said, “F–America, I f– renounce my citizenship. I'm f— coming here.”

“There is too much stupidity in the world to return to this miserable excuse for a country. Oh, I'm not kidding. “You're going to get a lot more from me in the coming days,” the striker added.
