Heavy rain and flood risk: System effects

Like a spring breeze

The system headed for Quebec looks like April: it will be accompanied by a strong moderate surge that will see the mercury rise to 15 degrees Celsius in southern Quebec. However, this can have consequences. This increase in temperature will significantly melt the snow cover further north. Water from melting snow not only poses a risk of flooding, but will be linked to significant amounts of rain forecast throughout the day on Wednesday.

All of Quebec will be affected by the rain. Except for James Bay, rain will dominate Tuesday through Thursday. The heaviest rainfall occurs north of the St. Lawrence River. Inland, up to 50mm of rain is expected in the Outais, Laurentians, Lanadier, Mauritius and Laurentides Wildlife Reserves.

Gaspésie will not be left out either: similar levels are expected in the south of the peninsula, especially near the Baie-des-Chaleurs.

Over three days

The disturbance will enter from the southwest of the province later on Tuesday. There is a risk of thunderstorms for Pontiac and Temiscaming. This low pressure area will bring stormy conditions to the south and center during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. Rain will intensify early Wednesday morning and continue into the evening along the St. Lawrence River. The disturbance will make landfall during Wednesday to Thursday night.

There will be wind. On Wednesday, wind gusts of up to 70 kmph are expected in southern and central regions. In the east, it will take your breath away on Thursday: Gusts of up to 80 km/h or 90 km/h in Caspé.

It is possible to see some flakes fall during this drop in temperature, but no significant snow accumulation can be expected at this time.
