Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling Come to Life – Variety

Margot Robbie appears as the famous statue in the official trailer for the Warner Bros. movie. ‘Barbie.’ The Oscar-nominated Robbie leads a star-studded cast that includes a muscular Ryan Gosling who plays Ken, a Barbie boy. The two actors aren’t the only two Barbie and Ken dolls in the movie. Dua Lipa plays mermaid Barbie, for example, along with several other actors as a different iteration of the famous doll.

The first trailer for “Barbie” — which includes a nod to Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” — officially introduced the world to Ruby’s Barbie, but didn’t reveal much about the characters or the story. Since then, it has been revealed that Barbie and Ken were placed in the real world and forced to contend with the hardships of not only being dolls.

Gerwig has recruited a host of stars alongside Robbie and Gosling, including Will Ferrell as CEO of Mattel, Conor Swindells, Nicola Coughlan, Emerald Vinyl, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Sharon Rooney and Anna Cruz Cain, Rito Arya, and Jimmy Demetriou plus additional Barbie and Kens, including Emma Mackie, Esa Ray, Harry Neff, Alexandra Shipp, Simo Liu, Scott Evans, and Nkoti Gatua.

Directed by Gerwig, “Barbie” was co-written by the director and her husband, film director Noah Baumbach. Gerwig indicated that she was a little anxious and a little panicked upon taking on the long-awaited project, saying, “This feeling that I knew was going to be a really thrilling horror. Normally that’s where the best things are. I’m terrified of it. Anything you want, “This could be a career terminator,” you’re like, “Well, maybe I should do that.”
