Michigan announces Sherwin Moore as full-time head coach

Michigan has its man.

Two days after Jim Harbaugh retired from the NFL to lead the Los Angeles Chargers, the national champion Wolverines have promoted offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Sherron Moore to head coach, the school announced Friday.

Moore was unbeaten during the four games he replaced Harbaugh last season. Now he takes his place as Michigan's head coach on a full-time basis.

“I have prepared my entire coaching career for this opportunity and I cannot think of a better place to be a head coach than at the University of Michigan,” Moore said in a prepared statement. “We will do everything every day as a team to continue the legacy of championship football that has been played in Michigan for the past 144 years.”

On the same day Harbaugh took over the Chargers' head coaching job, Michigan All-America guard Zach Zinter tweeted: “No need to do interviews. It's Papa Moore time.”

And now it's official.

“Cherrone has proven to be a great leader for our football program, especially the offensive line and players on the offensive side of the football,” Michigan athletics director Ward Manuel said. “He is a dynamic, fierce and competitive person who brings out the best in the players he mentors. The players love playing with him and being in the building with him every day.

Manuel added, “Sheron stepped up this fall and served as interim head coach when the program and especially the team needed him. Sheron handled this situation in a way that reinforced my already growing confidence in him. He didn't.” To him, it was always about the team!”
