An ancestral building in downtown Montreal was engulfed in flames Friday night into Saturday, requiring the intervention of more than 80 firefighters.
The Montreal Fire Department (SIM) received a call in the middle of the night to report a fire in a two-story residential building on the corner of Tupper and St. Streets — built 100 years ago. -Matthew.
According to SIM spokesperson Émilie Barbeau-Charlebois, one of the three dormitories in the building was occupied when the fire broke out, but no one was injured.
The fire appeared to have spread to the rear of the building but was quickly brought under control by firefighters around 4am today. The size of the flames triggered five SIM alarms and mobilized more than 80 firefighters to the scene.
“It is still too late to ascertain the cause of the fire,” Ms. said Barbeau-Charlebois. As of now, there is no indication that it was arson. The file is still in the hands of firefighters, who will try to determine the exact cause and origin of the flames.
