Nasdaq Falls Like Tesla, Netflix Casts a Shadow: Stock Market News Today

Stocks were mixed at the opening of Thursday’s session as the Nasdaq fell after updates on Tesla (TSLA) and Netflix (NFLX) sparked earnings season and a new batch of results began to emerge.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) was down about 0.4% at the open, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) was roughly flat. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) rose 0.4%.

After-hours earnings on Wednesday from Netflix and Tesla — the first to report on the tech giants that have led the stock rally recently — failed to excite investors. Shares of Netflix slumped after losing revenue, while CEO Elon Musk’s hint that Tesla is planning more price cuts helped push its shares lower.

That seemed to dampen hopes that technology could give a boost to its second-quarter earnings season, which got off to a good start with upbeat reports from heavyweight Wall Street.

But the results continue into next Thursday, which could change the mood. Shares of Johnson & Johnson rose after it beat earnings, while American Airlines raised its annual earnings forecast.
