Nicholls rejoins Liberal Caucus: 3rd Deputy Speaker of National Assembly for two years

MP Marie-Claude Nicholls returns to the Liberal fold. He assumed the post of 3rd Vice President of the National Assembly, but only for the last two years of his mandate, Le Journal has learned.

The PLQ’s new interim leader made it a priority. Marc Tanguay met with a selection from Vaudreuil on Sunday to rejoin the team. Both are due to appear before the media on Tuesday to formalize a deal that will kick off a three-day preparatory meeting of Liberal MPs to return to parliament.

After reflection, Ms. Nichols tabled a proposal to hold the position of 3rd Vice President exceptionally for two years. The acting chef cut the pear in half. Franz Benjamin, first chosen by Dominic Anglede for the seat, will hold the post for the next two years.

There does not appear to be any precedent for a predetermined two-year term for this position. In fact, generally, presidents or vice presidents are appointed for four years. But according to reliable sources, nothing in the terms of the National Assembly prevents it. Keep in mind that this position comes with a 35% salary premium.

It remains to be seen whether other political organizations will adopt this strategy.

Teraji is the Speaker of Parliament

Monday continued with a slight reshuffling of the party cards as Dominic Anglade left.

With Marc Tanguy becoming interim president, Moncep Teraji is the Speaker of the Parliament and Virginie Dufour is the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament. Philomena Rotirotti remains opposition chief whip and Enrico Ciccone remains caucus leader.

But MNA Nicholls’ return to the PLQ line-up will involve other changes in the responsibilities of the official opposition’s shadow cabinet.

During the last legislature, Vaudreuil’s elected representative was the opposition critic for municipal affairs and housing. Rumor has it that he could resume part of his past duties while awaiting appointment as the 3rd Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.
