Update: Service has resumed on the Northeast Corridor, NJ Transit said just before 10 a.m., and the delay was 45 minutes starting at 8:15 a.m.
NJ Transit train service on the Northeast Corridor Line to and from New York Penn Station was suspended early Sunday due to Amtrak signal issues.
The agency announced the suspension between New York and Trenton just after 5:30 a.m. on a key travel day for the city's New Year's Eve festivities.
Midtown Direct rail service is being diverted to Hoboken, where PATH service is available. NJ Transit train tickets are honored by PATH at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd Street in Manhattan.
Signal issues also affect Atlantic City Line trains. Service on this line between Cherry Hill and the 30th Street station in Philadelphia has been suspended. Tickets are honored by PATCO at Lindenwold Station.
North Jersey Coast Line trains will operate between Bay Head and Avenel while Raritan Valley service will operate between Raritan and Cranford.
At around midnight on Sunday, the service was delayed for 60 minutes before being reduced to 30 minutes.
Amtrak trains are running, but are experiencing delays of up to two hours, according to an 8:15 a.m. statement.
“We are currently experiencing server/signal issues on the Northeast Corridor,” Amtrak said in a statement. “Trains are departing late and operating at reduced speeds. Long delays are expected.”
Amtrak operates NJ Transit trains between New York City and Trenton.
