Shot dead in a crowded restaurant: Bernard Serban’s killers were not very smart

Suspects who killed an organized crime relative in a crowded Laval restaurant in June showed recklessness, allegedly killing a second man days later when the heat was already on them.

Tafari Bezabeh, 19, and Jalen Joel Campbell Brown, 21, have been on the crosshairs of Sûreté du Québec Crimes Against Person investigators for months. Following the assassination, likely committed on behalf of a street gang, information led investigators to Toronto. So they sent a complete explanation sheet to the police department so they could keep an eye.

Unexpectedly, the same two suspects were arrested a month later for their involvement in a mass shooting in the Queen City where seven people, including two teenagers, were injured. A 24-year-old man also died.

Toronto police quickly made contact with the incident in Laval and notified the SQ.

“When you’re killing, especially in a crowded place like that restaurant, you can say you’re taking your shot. You suspect the heat might be on you. Others, however, did the opposite,” says the source.

Their arrests are in addition to the arrest of 25-year-old Ontario girl Britney Lewis days after Bernard Serfan was murdered in Pickering, Ontario. He faces charges of premeditated murder and conspiracy.
