CINCINNATI — Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

Rookie third baseman Royce Lewis was also scheduled to undergo more tests, including an MRI on Thursday after the team returned home, on his left hamstring. He was not in the starting lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Correa has been suffering from his injury since last May, and it worsened in the first half on Monday. The decision to place him on the injured list, retroactive to Tuesday, came after an MRI was performed, according to interim manager Jayce Tingler.

If Minnesota, which leads the American League Central, makes the playoffs, its first postseason game will likely be on Oct. 3, 14 days after the IL announcement.

“We believe this is the best way to give Carlos a complete and meaningful playoff run,” Tingler said.

Minnesota entered Wednesday’s game with a magic number of three to win its third division title in five seasons.

Correa hit .230 in 135 games for the team.

Lewis pulled his hamstring during Tuesday’s game. He hit .309 with 15 home runs and 52 RBIs in 58 games, including the Twins’ single-season record for four major league runs.

“He was riding [exercise] “Bicycle,” Tingler said.

The Twins recalled outfielder Trevor Larnach from Triple-A St. Louis.
