The US Embassy in Russia asks Americans to leave the country

The US Embassy in Russia is urging Americans in the country to leave and warning US citizens against traveling to Russia after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered 300,000 reservists to be called up to help depleted forces in Ukraine.

The embassy said in a security alert Russia said on Wednesday it could prevent US citizens from leaving the country and recruit dual nationals for military service.

Officials said Russia could also refuse to recognize US dual citizenship or limit their access to US consular assistance.

Several flights were booked and prices soared after Putin announced the call-up of reservists for the first time since World War II. Russian forces suffered heavy losses throughout the war, especially since Ukraine launched a counterattack earlier this month in which it reclaimed thousands of square kilometers of territory.

The US Embassy said on Wednesday that flights are very limited and often unavailable on short notice, but road and car routes remain open. The embassy added that it is very limited in its ability to assist US citizens and people should make independent arrangements as soon as possible.

Officials also said that US citizens should remember that the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are not guaranteed in Russia and should avoid all social or political protests and not take security photos during protests. The Russian authorities arrested Americans who participated in the protests.

Protests erupted across Russia after Putin’s announcement, and hundreds of people were arrested by police.

The embassy also said in the security alert that US citizens must carry correct identification, including a current US passport and Russian visa, and have a contingency plan that does not depend on US assistance.
