A 76-year-old woman was simply walking in Toronto on Wednesday morning when she was approached by a man who shot her in the face multiple times with an air rifle for no apparent reason.

Toronto police explained at a press conference on Friday that they were able to arrest a 27-year-old man suspected of being the author of this wanton crime.

It all started just after 11:30 a.m., when the victim was walking in the Scarborough neighborhood on the city's east end when the suspect approached her from behind.

When he reached the woman, the man took out an air gun and shot her, hitting her in the face and hands. One of the projectiles also shattered the victim's glasses, police said.

The pedestrian suffered significant but non-life threatening injuries. He returned home on Friday, where he is trying to recover from his physical and mental injuries.

“She's obviously very traumatised. She's worried about walking the streets again,” said Inspector Michael Williams.

The suspect, Umar Saad, who lives nearby, can be traced using various surveillance cameras. He has been charged with assault, grievous bodily harm, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon.
