Canadian player gets 21st drunk driving conviction

Police in Abbotsford, British Columbia, believe they have found Canada's top drink-driving champion.

Roy Heidt, 66, reached the tragic record of his 21st drunken driving conviction in December following a crash in August 2022, police said in a press release Friday.

On August 15, 2022, police responded to a motorcycle accident owned by Roy Heidt. At the scene, patrol officers noted that the passenger on the motorcycle had sustained serious injuries and the driver fled in the presence of several witnesses who were able to help police identify him.

At the time of the crash, Heidt was more than twice the alcohol limit.

The repeat offender, who is well known to police, pleaded guilty on December 18 to driving while intoxicated, despite not having the right to be behind the wheel of any vehicle.

“What is incredible about this charge is that this is Mr. Heidt's 21st drunken driving conviction, the most drunken driving conviction of any person in Canadian history,” Abbotsford police said.

An incorrigible driver is usually required to stay off the road for some time, after being sentenced to nearly five years in prison.
