Canada said on Monday that the earliest possible departure date for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his delegation from New Delhi is late Tuesday afternoon, and that the country’s armed forces are continuing to do their best to bring them home.

The prime minister and his entourage, who were due to leave Delhi after Sunday’s G20 summit, were stranded here due to technical problems with their planes.

Earlier in the day, an informed source said that a ferry flight to bring them back is expected to land at Delhi airport around 10pm on Monday.

In an emailed statement to PTI, the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office said the Canadian Armed Forces continue to make every effort to repatriate the delegation.

Press Secretary Mohamed Hussein said in the statement: “We will keep you updated regularly as the situation develops. Their latest update shows the earliest possible departure time is late Tuesday afternoon. The situation remains fluid.”

Trudeau, who arrived in the national capital on Friday, is scheduled to return Sunday after the G20 summit. However, his departure was delayed due to technical problems with the plane.

“Upon our departure for the airport, the Canadian Armed Forces informed us that CFC001 was experiencing technical problems,” the channel quoted the statement from the Prime Minister’s Office as saying.

“These issues cannot be resolved overnight, and our delegation will remain in India until alternative arrangements are made,” CTV News said Sunday, quoting a statement from Trudeau’s office.
